EU Food Supplement Directive
The EU Food Supplement Directive was adopted June 10, 2002 by the European Parliament. The directive established harmonized rules for the labeling of food supplements and introduced specific rules on vitamins and minerals in food supplements sold in the European Union. The directive does not apply to retailers in the United States. However, manufacturers, distributors and retailers who had exported dietary supplements containing ingredients that were not on the directive's approved ingredient list were no longer able to sell those products in the European Union as of August 1, 2005.
